Kids are already heading Back to School and your schedule is filling up quickly.
This time of year is stressful, not only for us, but for our pets, too. It can be difficult for your dog to adjust after becoming accustomed to spending all day with their favorite kid during the summer.
To help them transition try to establish a new routine.
Before you leave for the day, plan on taking them for a walk. This will help burn out their morning energy and leave them in a calmer state of mind. It’s also a great habit for you! Win win!
When it’s time to go to school, leave your dog with plenty of distractions.
Kong filled treats and lots of toys will help occupy them throughout the day. When you get home, give them attention before you move on to the next task, to reassure them that everything is going to be okay and they are secure.
After school, the kids will need to work on their school projects.
These projects often involve a lot of new items that will pique your dog’s interest. Make sure to keep glue, markers, and other craft supplies out of reach. Although many of these items are considered low toxicity, they can still cause internal blockages, leading to a very expensive and stressful emergency trip to the vet.
Back to school is a fun and exciting time.
Now that the kids are back in school, maybe this will open up some time in your schedule to take your dog to doggy school or training! Mental stimulation and socialization are so important to the overall health of your pet. Try a doggy agility course or spend time at a dog park. This will also help your dog to bond with you if they are new to your family. Click here to see our exclusive dog park tour of Tucson post!
