FAQ: Am I Ready to Adopt a Puppy?

Today’s question is…Am I Ready To Adopt A Puppy?

There are many things to consider when adopting a puppy. Puppies are cute and cuddly, but they also require a lot of work and dedication.

Watch this video and scroll down for more points to consider before adopting.

SUPPLIES:

Puppies need a lot of supplies. When you take home your puppy, you should also count on purchasing bowls, food, a leash, a collar, a crate, puppy pads, and numerous toys. The Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA)’s PAWSH stores at La Encantada, Park Place and Main Campus can help you with all these purchases, and our merchandise is always tax-free!  HSSA’s great staff and volunteers can help you with any questions you might have about your supply list.

TIME:

Puppies require a lot of time, patience, and dedication. People fall in love with puppies right away for obvious reasons! They are adorable and fun. They are also babies that don’t have manners or training yet. Keep that in mind when adopting a puppy. Your puppy will need an adjustment period before it understands the schedules and expectations of your house. Expect interrupted sleep, lots of potty accidents, and some chewed shoes. It will be worth it in the end, we promise! Remember that your puppy will need positive reinforcement training and potty training. Read some of HSSA’s tips in our pet behavior library.

MEDICAL CARE:

When you adopt a puppy from HSSA, it will already have had its initial vaccinations as well as spay or neuter surgery. Your adoption counselor will inform you as to when the next vaccinations are due.
